"Roaring out of the gates is the 15th full-length album by no wave/punk
jazz/brutal prog iconoclasts The Flying Luttenbachers, led by founding
member and main composer Weasel Walter. There's a few special twists
this time, friends. The last two albums, "Shattered Dimension" and
"Imminent Death", both epic double-length affairs released in 2019,
focused on open ended, improvisational approaches more so than heavily
structured ones. "Negative Infinity" is a sort of return-to-form in a
regard, featuring 6 tightly scripted doses of what they call "Brutal
Prog" - the tag Weasel coined in the early 2000s to describe an elite
breed of intense, complex bands who emphasised harshness and intensity
over the typical prog-rock flutes and fairies positivity. This is prog
for THE APOCALYPSE, not your uncle. The merciless opening track sets the
tone for the album - "Fury of the Delusion" is a through-composed,
neck-snapping whirlwind of a number where an unrelenting, hair-raisingly
harmonized line spat forth in unison by saxophone and<span class="bcTruncateMore">
duel guitars is investigated, turned upside down and transformed into a
deadly musical cyborg. Oh yes - the other big surprise is that Weasel
doesn't provide his usual hyperactive drumming on this release. The chap
has switched to guitar. He feels that it will be easier to drip sweat
on the punters that way.That's right. Close your eyes. That's Sam
Ospovat on the drums. Doesn't he sound great? We bet you won't even miss
the Weez! Dark overlords Tim Dahl (bass) and Matt Nelson (saxophone)
return once again and newest member Katie Battistoni plays the other
guitar parts. The closing number, "On The Verge Of Destruction" is a
monolithic side-long extrapolation off of Albert Ayler's bizarre '66/'67
"marching band on acid" musical suites. The group is shuttled through
an exacting sequence of berserk rollercoaster melodies and the whole
front line takes turns spewing outrageous solos. The structure coils up
the band to release a climactic orgy of noise before the piece goes back
to the beginning and winds down. The rest of the tunes may invoke
fragant whiffs of old Mayhem sturm und drang, Teenage Jesus and the
Jerks sonic terrorism, the jigsaw puzzle logic of the Rock In Opposition
bands and, ahem, even '90s Flying Luttenbachers style varsity team
punk-jazz ("Demonic Velocities II" appears here as a meta-sequel to the
old chestnut first performed by the group as early as 1993). The core
tenets of The Flying Luttenbachers remain: Dissonance, Speed,
Aggression, Weirdness, Singularity. This is perhaps the finest chapter
of the three-decade saga so far . . .</span><span> "<br /><br /></span></span></span></div>

I play the drums. Together, we do both in pretty unusual ways.
"Sandy found a place where we can play, so we got together and played. We didn't really intend to make a record, but we played and it sounded and felt good, so here it is. We think this is a different kind of thing than our other releases. It allows itself to develop. It's not forced. There's some space here the whole time. Maybe you will agree?"

is a Weasel Walter solo album consisting of seven loud, dissonant, obnoxious
compositions, six of which are short and one, very long. It is likely that it
resides somewhere in the vein of so-called "Noise Rock" or "No
Wave".<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is pure sonic terrorism,
driven by alienation, cynicism, and anger. Weasel Walter is the sole performer
on "Skhiizm", executing all guitars, drums and electronics as well as
bellowing up the noxious clouds of processed vocal noise which swath this
illogical, polluted set of aural scaffolds . The guitars are relentlessly
shrill, aggressive and irritating. The drums tend to be angular, simplistic and
punishing. The electronic stuff is mostly a bunch of weird noise that rises
through the cracks sporadically. The role of the vocals on "Skhiizm"
has devolved into a set of slate grey blankets of thick distorted static,
imparting no positive meaning. The imaginary lead singer of this fictional
"Skhiizm" band has no message, nothing to say, and, in fact, can
barely muster the momentum to emerge from the dark, musty cellar he dwells in. The
song titles will suffice instead of lyrics. The music is mostly pointless
destruction and ugliness. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You see, this
whole thing is a nightmarish mockery of a "rock band" which only
exists in the mind of Mr. Walter, and on this CD. The 20 minute long final
track is an extended suite based on the Poison Idea song "Hangover Heart
Attack" and it features endless, nerve-racking guitar soloing. We suppose
this album might appeal to people who pine over Walter's 1996 Flying
Luttenbachers release "Revenge" and stuff like Teenage Jesus and the
Jerks, early Swans, and Red Transistor (There's exactly one traditional fast
Black Metal song on this release also, friends). The material on
"Skhiizm" was originally performed live by Weasel Walter solo in
concert on two occasions in Brooklyn, New York during 2014 and 2016. We at
ugEXPLODE Records hope you either love or hate this release as much as we
either love or hate you. <br /></span></div>

<br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"Almost 80 minutes of jarring, surreal, raw improvised music by the duo of Sandy Ewen (guitar) and Weasel Walter (drums/live electronics) captured on this clear, powerful studio recording. The recording session was 3 hours long from set-up to tear-down and the music was mixed in several hours during the following day. There is no production per se on this cd - what you hear is a very indication of the sounds and dynamics the players created in real time. Each musician speaks a distinctively deconstructed language on their respective instrument and their interaction is often surprising, always relentless and subtly alien. Sandy Ewen's approach eschews the obligatory mounds of effects pedals (save one for panning) many guitarists use, instead concentrating on direct physicality, extended techniques and non-standard approaches using various simple preparations made with ordinary objects. Weasel Walter's articulate, fleet drumming aims to constantly disrupt continuity, creating chaotic scaffolds of focused illogic, and his use of simple live electronic processing blurs the roles within the soundscape. This is fast-paced musical Modernism in action by two unique voices in modern improvisation."<br /><br />Sandy Ewen: <br /><br />"When I began playing improvised music, I immediately started experimenting with objects on my guitar. In the context of group improvisation, my rudimentary rock guitar skills lagged in speed & timbral responsiveness. My growing collection of magnets, bolts, rods & chalk stretched out my sonic palate and allowed me to respond to the music instantaneously. Over the last 15 years, I’ve been developing these techniques, exploring nuances in objects and actions. I feel this path is somewhat unique for a guitar player. A more traditional path would have explored guitar pedals and computer processing, or would have worked to develop traditional fretting/strumming/fingerpicking approaches. My playing is also quite different from table-top prepared guitar. The physical distance with that approach creates music that is cleaner and more clinical. With the guitar on my lap, my music and my body are physically linked. My muscles strain, my body shakes, my arms mute or brush the strings - I am connected. My only pedal pans my sound between two amps. A very simple interface between my mind, body, sound & space. Weasel Walter is similarly committed to immediacy and directness. Our duo lives millisecond by millisecond; either of us are capable of a changing direction instantaneously. Our low-tech setup encourages quick responses and clarity. The music is always active & present."<br /><br />Weasel Walter:<br /><br />"Free improvisation potentially allows the most abstract musical relationships possible to flourish, especially when strong, distinctive languages intersect. I believe that Sandy Ewen and I have a very coherent sonic partnership, due to the fact that we share some specific ideals. Like Sandy, I am interested in obtaining the widest timbral possibilities with the simplest tools. I try to extend the possibilities of the drum set with extended techniques and preparations and I am interested in the widest range of possibilities with the LEAST amount of equipment. I don’t claim to be doing anything new in this regard, but what I hope I offer is a very well thought out and consistent approach to abstract modernism on my instrument. For a some time, I have used a primitive electronic setup to broaden my palette. In a nutshell it consists of a crappy microphone, volume pedal, a couple of cheap delays, preamplification and a small digital synth that only has a handful of crude presets which I find acceptable. The system is raw, specific and limited, insuring that the ideas come from ME, not the gizmos. I don’t want to get lost in pedals and loops and bullshit like that. I don’t want what I do to depend on overly specific or expensive items. As with pretty much everything else in my life, I don’t want endless possibilities - I want to know my tools and control them with clarity and confidence. My imagination is the main instrument, and my setup is merely a tool kit to express it. Sandy’s stripped down approach mirrors this perfectly. Playing with Sandy allows complete counterpoint, to the point of hilarious obtuseness. She isn’t terribly interested in tired tropes like imitation, so I know that any decision I make will be allowed to exist in a more sophisticated paradigm than is common with many other players. There’s no need at this point in history to prove the obviousness of our “listening to each other” to anybody. There’s no need to make any gestures in our music to prove we can “play our instruments” in any way other than exactly the way we want. Our ability to generate longer arcs and forms comes from our mutual love of contrast and surprise. There is a blatant bloody-mindedness to it. We are loud and vicious, but it comes out of a sensitivity and a need for a highly cultivated, alternative sort of communication which is less common. We offer a friendly “forget it” to the obvious. When it comes down to it, we both just do what we like, and we really like this music we make together. It does exactly what we want to do with it."<br /><br /><b><a href="https://sandyewenweaselwalter.bandcamp.com/album/idiomatic" target="_blank">BANDCAMP</a></b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">"A Pound Of Flesh" is a tour de force solo offering by musical polymath
Weasel Walter. Known for his wide ranging work with ensembles like The
Flying Luttenbachers, Cellular Chaos, XBXRX, Behold The Arctopus, and
Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, as well as his prolific career as an improviser,
producer, and composer, Walter reveals almost 5 hours of long, abstract
forms in this monolithic set. Ranging from detailed electro-acoustic
music to athletic solo drumming, skronkily deconstructed power trio
improvisations to minimalistic horrorscapes, harsh noise walls to solo
guitar deconstructions, "A Pound Of Flesh" is a manifesto of internal
coherence and brutal aesthetics. This box contains 4 CDs as well as a
full color 12 page booklet discussing the compositions. The
numbered/signed edition is limited to 100 copies only.</span>

band which originally existed between 1991 and 2007 and ran a renegade
stylistic gamut from hardcore Free Jazz improvisation to rigorous
Modernist composition, uniting many threads of outsider aesthetics
under the dictatorship of composer and instrumentalist Weasel Walter.
Alumni of the group include experimental rock heavies like Ed Rodriguez
(Deerhoof), Mick Barr (Krallice), Jonathan Hischke (Les Butcherettes, H<span class="text_exposed_show">ella)
and Alex Perkolup (Cheer-Accident), as well as noted improvisers Fred
Lonberg Holm, Jeb Bishop, Hal Russell, and Ken Vandermark. Over the
course of 16 official releases, The Flying Luttenbachers stood for
everything bracing and cathartic in modern music before the project
ended.<br /></span><br />

March 2017 marks the
first Flying Luttenbachers performances in more than a decade. The new
New York City-based trio, featuring Weasel Walter (drums), Tim Dahl

interpretations of classic material, keeping the thread of the project
while expanding the sonic possibilities into the present.<br /><br />

<a href="https://tombedvisionsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-inevitable"><br /></a><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b><a href="https://tombedvisionsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-inevitable">https://tombedvisionsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-inevitable</a></b><br /><br />"Having commissioned Weasel Walter for a release for Tombed Visions, I
wasn’t disappointed when he sent me back the riotous, unrelenting and
rhythmically audacious ‘The Inevitable’. What simply astonished me, was
that this was a solo a recording. Exactly. I literally had to triple
check this fact with him. This a not the sound of a well-oiled, well
giged and near telepathic trio, but the sound of one man playing with
the ferocity and inventiveness of 20. A man that has such a complete
vision of his own language that he literally able to perform, improvise
and summon the sound of band that have been playing together for decades
all on markedly different instruments, clawing out the most extreme
sonics from Double Bass, Drums and Guitar. And that’s because Weasel has
been doing exactly this for decades. Both sides rush by like an express
train to pain. Even in the moments when the drum grooves become
stuttered and shards of space are cleft in the sound, the double bass
carving out deep, coagulated earthen rumbles, these pockets of seeming
rest are permeated by a kind of amphetamine rush, waiting to kick back
in and turn you synapses into cinder. And there is so much groove in
this record. Weasel’s skin shearing, acidic surf guitar is perhaps the
guiding force of the record, spraying the battle locked drum and bass
with sheets of sounds that’ll sting your eyes with the amount of sweat
they’ve been produced with. Although seemingly unremitting and sustained
in its sonic attack, the aptly titled ‘The Inevitable’ has so much
worthy of revision in it. Of course, it’s a by the throat record, but
repeated listens, when you focus the individual patterns, licks,
contrapuntal elements involved in the maelstrom your ears are bleeding
from, there is a real mastery to be detected. So much detail is in the
ferocity, which makes it all the more alarming. This is a beating
administered by someone who knows exactly what they are doing. And you
should just accept and submit to it." - Tombed Visions press blurb</span>ugEXPLODEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01741704625684800165noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6662825200386371325.post-53213574680112991472016-07-20T09:02:00.001-07:002016-07-20T09:02:16.356-07:00Weasel Walter "Curses" released today on CD/digital formats<div data-contents="true">

"Curses" is technically a work of electro-acoustic music involving percussion and electronics. It is probably somewhat unlike anything else people would associate me with. It is detailed work focused on timbre and structure. The program can be played either in sequence or in shuffle mode. It should be played at a fairly loud volume. </span></span></div>

A compilation of cover songs recorded by Weasel Walter between 2000 and 2014. Excerpts from the liner notes:
<br />
<br />
"I started writing a really long, incendiary paean to Rock and
Roll-as-lifestyle, but, at alarming rate it got way too personal to the
extent that I started to realize very few of you could handle it. So,
I’m just going to say that for a while around the early 2000s, I was
dealing with a bunch of major paradigm shifts, and, for whatever reason,
my lifelong allegiance to rock music was rearing its head in a number
of sordid ways. . . Cynical and heartfelt at the same time, without a
conundrum in sight, I have always found joy, mirth and energy in
gleefully SLAUGHTERING various hallowed (and not-so-hallowed) lambs of
popular music. This collection encompasses several previously unreleased
archival recordings, as well as obscure solo compilation tracks."</div>

"Entertainment" is a declaration of war on the U.S. white status quo. You want to be happy. Fulfilled. You want to think there's a point to life. This movie is a stunning epic of tedium, boredom, apathy, sadness and banal horror, painted in esoteric allegorical strokes. It is complete nihilism, deftly articulated. It is excellent. <br />
<br />
What happens when art is the only thing keeping somebody alive, yet it is obviously their death sentence at the same time? "The Comedian" in this film repeatedly points out and ridicules the total ugliness in life and then slams face first over and over into that ugliness, not to mention that the only audience who seems to ever "get it" are the ugliest garbage on the earth. <br />
<br />
If we are going strictly by movie titles, "Entertainment" makes "Happiness" look like Laurel and Hardy. "Entertainment" is a two hour-long utter death-screech of a threnody for the first world artiste. It is the sound that some of us make while we bang our heads against the concrete of reality until torrents of blood come gushing out. Naturally, it took a master comedian like Gregg Turkington to create one of the most bleak existential nightmares imaginable. He possesses the reckless sensitivity to stare hard into his own personal void and show it to us with no mercy. He finds that the world is neither laughing with him or at him - rather it just doesn't care at all. <br />
<br />
The obvious "laughs" are basically over in the first five minutes. During the opening salvo, the moribund pandering of a sad clown/mime to the lowest common denominator sets an unbearably awkward tone which never resolves. The world of "Entertainment" is one where idiots and perverts win, and the artist is valueless trash. Early on, John C. Reilly is momentarily hysterical as a bumbling, artless capitalist who senses value in The Comedian's work, but just cannot get it. The Capitalist feels compelled to siphon some sort of perceived authenticity from The Comedian. The exchange is ultimately hollow. <br />
<br />
The scenes all last too long, on purpose. The soundtrack is mostly muted, dissonant cacophony, surrounded by stretches of awkward silence. The only time The Comedian actually comes alive is during the short bursts when he is on stage. Even then, confrontation and disaster is the goal, or punch line. His act is mostly about brutal ridicule of the pointlessness and fleetingly temporary futility of celebrity. In the film, we hear the exact same stilted Neil Hamburger jokes he has been making for more than 15 years (to my recollection), and that's the point - The Comedian has come to a cross road, where his material no longer falls into any meaningful context. His work has reached an impasse, and all that's left is death. <br />
<br />
The Comedian lives to create discomfort people don't want, yet he needs people who don't want it to accomplish that goal. It's a catch-22. Ultimately, The Comedian is more impotent than Don Quixote. He is a vortex, closing in on himself. He has made his whole life about proving that everything sucks, only to find that everything sucks. This movie is a protracted suicide note. <br />
<br />
I suppose this movie resonates with me so strongly because I've always been a comedian, first and foremost. All of my music is comedic, often in the blackest ways, but sometimes in the most base sense, but even when it's obvious, I'm generally trying to do something far below the surface. I can't help it. This is the lens I view life through: I am coping with existence the best way I know how - trying to keep some kind of motivation, while acknowledging, mocking and sometimes finding the exquisite beauty in chaos. This is not a popular angle. I don't expect anybody to get it or care at this point. It's largely self-serving. Hell, it's no less pointless than what everybody else on this planet does, so I continue. It's what makes sense to me. Where that's going is another matter altogether. <br />
<br />
In "Entertainment", Gregg Turkington, as The Comedian, is basically trapped in a wasteland full of vapid automatons who don't understand why he would even bother. He no longer communicates to anyone. The world doesn't want or need him, yet he has shunned those who do in order to play out a terminal directive. He is outnumbered and doomed, regardless of the clarity of his vision. The fall downhill begins to gain rapid momentum as the artist finally starts wondering why his life's work means anything even to himself. ugEXPLODEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01741704625684800165noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6662825200386371325.post-60881956751651655582015-10-31T11:36:00.003-07:002015-10-31T11:36:50.241-07:00New Releases at Bandcamp: Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, Walter/Pitsiokos, Weasel Walter solo guitar!<div style="text-align: center;">
